Awesome Maria, who hadn’t been out since last June in winning the GI Ogden Phipps, demolished her four other female foes, including B/C Ladies Classic champ in Royal Delta, to win the $100,000, GIII Sabin Stakes by 8- lengths, in a winning time of 1:42.82 for 1/16 mile course at Gulfstream Park today (VIDEO).
Royal Delta did close well, shaking off the winter rust, for 2nd by just a head over Groupie Doll who faded a bit to 3rd.
Also ran were: Canadian Mistress and Ghostly Darkness!
So our “Weekend Pick” of 3,2,4 for this contest was on the mark but as we had suggested the payouts were feeble at best!
So Awesome Maria successfully defended her GIII Sabin Stakes title here at Gulfstream Park this afternoon and looked like she hadn’t miss the 2nd half of the 2011 season at all.
Look for her is something a bit more lucrative next time out as Awesome Maria is still awesome!
* Note, Gulfstream Park paid just a measly $100k for what would be a big time GI Fillies and Mares tussle later on this season. Nice money management there folks!
